Troye Sivan - Got Me Started
Troye Sivan Mellet is a South African-Australian singer-songwriter, actor, model and fashion designer. He started to become popular on YouTube and on TV. On August 15, 2014, he released his first EP titled TRXYE, which debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in over 55 countries, and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.
Sivan released his third studio album Something to Give Each Other, on July 13, 2023, being a showcase of dazzling pop-R&B eclecticism, and with clear inspiration in K-Pop.
In this remake I am going to deconstruct the song Got Me Started, the second single from this third album. Listen to it below, and read the entire music production process below.
Got Me Started - Synth Production
The song is completely electronic and only has synthesizers, without bass or electric guitar.
We will start with the lead synth that opens the song, which was sampled from the song Shooting Stars by Bag Raiders, being the first time they gave permission to use the melody of your song.
This sound was originally achieved with a stylophone.
To recreate it digitally, I have used the TAL-U-NO with the following parameters. Remember that you can download all these presets by supporting me on my patreon.

In addition to this melody, there are a couple more layers that generate a chorus of voices, and also an ambient sound sample, listen to the result below.
Intro Synths
After this initial melody, the harmony appears with an electric piano, which I have recreated with the characteristic sound of the DX7. This harmony is made up of three layers, two are electric pianos with the DX7, very similar, and another with a brass from the TAL-U-NO to give solidity to the notes. Listen to it all together below.

Below there is a synth bass playing the tone of the song, which I recreated with the Arturia Mini V. Listen to it here.

In addition to this sound, in some parts a more percussive “pluck” sound appears, which I have recreated with the Arturia CZ V. Listen to it alone, and in conjunction with the bass synth, do you appreciate it on the left?

In the chorus, where he sings “you just got me started…” there is an additional layer with Arturia CZ V with the following pad sound.

Towards the second half of the song, a new brass begins to appear making the chords but with a touch of arpeggio, which I have recreated in the following way with the CZ V.

Finally, in the bridge before the final outro a new synthesizer appears, with a key sound with an auto-pan, which I have recreated with the TAL-U-NO, listen to it here.

I recorded the main vocal with a single vocal track, and added some chorus with harmonies in some parts of the song.
For the production of the vocals, I used the same base effects chain that I explain in other articles on this website. To them I have also added some delay automation at the ends of some phrases or reverb at the end of the song. Listen to these examples below.

In the choruses where he sings “You just got me started…” I have recreated it by applying autotune with the modified throat formant, making the voice have a higher pitched sound. In addition, I have added the waves auto-pumper so that it has that ascending-descending volume “pumping” effect typical of electronic music.

La canción es totalmente electrónica y solamente cuenta con sintetizadores, sin bajo ni guitarra eléctrica.
Empezaremos por el lead que abre la canción, que fue sampleado de la canción Shooting Stars de Bag Raiders, siendo la primera vez que daban permiso para usar la melodía de su canción.

Además de esta melodía, hay un par de capas más que generan un coro de voces, y también un sample de sonido ambiente, escúcha el resultado a continuación.

Después de esta melodía inicial, aparece la armonía con un piano eléctrico, que he recreado con el sonido característico del DX7. Esta armonía la componen tres capas, dos son pianos eléctricos con el DX7, muy parecidos, y otro con un brass del TAL-U-NO para dar solidez a las notas. Escúchalo todo junto a continuación.

Por debajo se encuentra un synth bass haciendo las tónicas de la canción, que he recreado con el Mini V de Arturia. Escúchalo aquí.

Además de este sonido, en algunas partes aparece un sonido de “pluck” más percusivo, que he recreado con el CZ V de Arturia. Escúchalo en solitario, y en conjunto con el bass synth, ¿lo aprecias a la izquierda?

En los estribillos, donde canta “you just got me started…” hay una capa adicional con el CZ V de Arturia con el siguiente sonido de pad.

Hacia la segunda mitad de la canción, comienza a aparecer un nuevo brass haciendo los acordes pero con un toque de arpeggio, que he recreado de la siguiente forma con el CZ V.

Finalmente, en el bridge antes del outro final aparece un nuevo sintetizador, con sonido de keys con un auto-pan, que he recreado con el TAL-U-NO, escúchalo aquí.

La voz principal la he grabado con una sola pista de voz, y añadido algún coro con armonías en algunas partes de la canción.
Para la producción de las voces, he utilizado la misma cadena de efectos base que explico en otros artículos de esta web. A ellos he añadido también alguna automatización de delay en los finales de algunas frases o de reverb en el final de la canción. Escucha estos ejemplos a continuación.

En los estribillos donde canta “You just got me started…” lo he recreado aplicando autotune con el formant throat modificado, haciendo que la voz tenga un sonido más agudo. Además, le he puesto el auto-pumper de waves para que tenga ese efecto de volumen ascendente-descendente “pumping” típico de música electrónica.
